What shall we do with 60 seconds? If 60 seconds is all that is left, what shall we do with such short period of time? How significant can 60 seconds be? How do we value something? Do we count, simply by the length of its existence?

These are the questions underlying the original audio/visual internet project “60 Seconds” organized by Sleepatwork.
-
“60 Seconds: A Schizophrenic Manual for Eternity” consists of 18 audio works each in the length of 60 seconds, as inspired by the original “60 Seconds” project. It is an irrational rhetoric of extreme mood swing and boundaries crossing: from high-speed digital-hardcore-like mutation, ill-logical audio collage/cut-up, microsound-like tones/bleeps/crackles, defective audio deconstruction, pseudo-post-rock movement, and brutal harsh noise to melodic sonic expression. Re-visioning of our ideas (illusions) on ego, unity, reality and eternity through a gestalt of sonic polytheism.

One may consider this as a philosophical quest not unlike “Uroborus: A Study on No-Input Device”. The only difference is that, this time, an extreme opposite path has been chosen.
Or simply, consider this as an illogical self-portrait, or a schizophrenic quest for ultimate reality. Assuming that, the difference between madman and artist is that, the former dives into the world of unconscious and seldom comes back, while the latter, is an expert traveler between the “mad” world and the “normal” world…

Locd12 - FM3 + Dou Wei 竇唯 - Hou Guan Yin 后觀音

FM3, one of China’s most progressive sound art groups, with their latest release, “Hou Guan Yin” marks the rise of a new Chinese sonic art form.

The “Buddha Machine” is their phenomenal release that breaks down the limits of music format. Teaming up with legendary Chinese rock singer/musician Dou Wei in their latest release “Hou Guan Yin”, once again they go beyond the boundary by creating a new sonic map of its own. With additional sound input from well-known Chinese experimental music icon, Yan Jun, the release is a project that brings together remarkable musical talents that shape the Chinese music scene.

Converging two lineages of Chinese underground music: the microsound/noise ambience of FM3 and the ever evolving rock experiment of Dou Wei, “Hou Guan Yin” is showcasing a new sonic activity that blends both the western and eastern mentality into a system of its own.

While the sonic appearance of FM3 + Dou Wei is apparently western in nature, the poetic thoughts and emotions that flow through their sounds show a deep appreciation of eastern thinking and sensibility. It is like a group of avant-garde musicians, meditating on the classic Chinese ink painting or an abstract expressionist painting, translating ancient eastern philosophy into landscapes and free-form brush strokes.

The most impressive part of “Hou Guan Yin” is the chemical interaction between FM3 and Dou Wei. FM3 with their microsound gestures trigger the ambient undercurrent of Dou Wei’s drumming and turn it into a new pulsating energy; Dou Wei at the same time reveals the hidden motions and shifting patterns in FM3’s ambience. The result is a unique poetic beauty that lies within the rhizomatic presentation and interaction of their sounds and instrumentations.

POSTOFF began a regular live activity, apart from these contests. An activity unfortunately but often stopped by many changes in the line-up. The opening show at the “Comunicativo” Festival, with the group playing before Rutili-Becker duo ( Califone) is a very important step. The Summer of 2005 is the turning point of POSTOFF career; a line-up reduction, only three members ( guitar,bass,drums ) is done with the intention to add new elements after a short period. But every musician of the band choosed an evolution towards a rude sound, without embellishments or strange musical stratums. This istinctive sound abandoned the musical quotes of the indie world, (that penalized the old works), but not abandoned indie approach, and band increased their influences: new wave, noise, garage rock, punk and many others.

Locd11r - Alok - Stalemate (limited 50 cdr)

Alok was a self-taught guitarist and bassist who formed his first band Pillow early in 1996. After they disbanded in mid 98, he formed Slow Tech Riddim with Kim, when they started combining electronic music with live instruments. Together they had published two albums--Greatest Hits Vol.6 and On/Off under PMPS, contributed in numerous compilation releases. Since 2001, Alok appeared as a solo artist. He published the first 3" mini album OK Karaoke with The Pancakes in 2001. From the end of 2002 to 2005, he released 3 albums: Wahoo!, 31 Minutes to Midnight and 29 Minutes from the End.

The most experimental work ever of Alok's, Stalemate is his 2nd release in this 3"cdr series.

Locd08r - Monitors - Buller (limited 50 cdr)

Monitors hail from the forests and fields of the rural Midwest. Drawing cues from Messiaen's utilization of bird songs, Sun Ra's theories on collective improvisation, US Maple's control of time and space, and Ex Models' fundustrialism, they seek to create compositions that evolve from a process much akin to the way in which primitive ritual dramas developed in prehistoric tribal cultures. Monitors formed in the spring of 2004 as a reactionary response to their disappointing local music scene. They self-released Geology in 2005 and will release Buller in 2006 on Lona Records as part of their 3" CDR series.

Buller explodes with the intensity of a billion somersaulting shards of noise rock shrapnel fired from the cracked barrel of a double-loaded, short-fused black powder cannon that targets the very center of your being with a crosshair made from the jawbones of racehorses. It never misses and the blast pattern from the shot engraves your inner ear with your new mantra: "MONITORS + YOU = TRULUV4EVA." Joe whoops and pounds his guitar as though his animal spirit has just been baptized inside the curl of a tsunami wave and is psychically speed-dialing you to communicate the revelation of its experience through caterwauled chirps, howls, and other modes of forest speech. Kevin discovers fire on guitar for the first time again and teaches it new tricks. Paul's bass playing is more beautiful than a mushroom cloud on the horizon seen in the reflection of a bathroom mirror while shaving in a dream from which you can't wake unless it's already happened. Andrew only uses drumheads made from the hides of woolly mammoths felled by his own hands and booms with the force of giant lazer hammers launched out of deep space by alien warships from the future. Highly recommended.

Locd07r - Sin:Ned - Uroborus: A Study on No-Input Device (limited 50 cdr)

Sin:Ned, an idiosyncratic writer and a sonic junkie from Hong Kong, hacks and twists anything he can put his hands on. While not writing as a pseudo-music journalist elaborating his esoteric worldview, in the same idiosyncratic fashion, he spends much of his time hacking and sculpting sonic materials with his laptop and various electronic gears. Used to be a member of the internet-based music collective Tapegerm, and had also performed as a sonic improviser in the Media Jam of 03 HK Sound And Vision Festival, while some of his other sound works can be found in various compilations such as “mondisk”, “MCB200” and Alok's “29 minutes from the end”.

Uroborus (also known as Ouroboros) literally means "tail swallower" in Greek. It is an ancient alchemical symbol depicting a snake or dragon swallowing its own tail, forming a circle and constantly creating/re-creating itself. In Alchemy, it represents the spirit of Mercury (the substance that permeates all matter), and symbolizes continuous renewal, the cycle of life and death, and the interplay/interdependence of the opposites. It also represents eternal return, and the cyclical nature of all things that begin anew as soon as they end. One might also consider Uroborus as a symbolic representation of Nietzsche's Eternal Return and Jung's Enatiodromia.

“Uroborus” is a sonic exploration created within such symbolic framework. On the other hand, it is also inspired by Toshimaru Nakamura’s “No-input Mixing Board” and Sachiko M's “No-sample Sampler”. Ross Bencina's AudioMulch is being used as a self-contained apparatus without the use of any audio input or signal generator (i.e. no samples, synthesizers, instruments…etc), to create a slow evolving mass of sonic textures that endlessly unfolds over time.

The result is this almost transpersonal-like, self-referencing sonic life form.

Sin:Ned,有人稱為樂評人,亦有人形容為音樂文字工作者。實質上,是一位文字痴及聲響迷徒。曾是香港另類音樂雜誌MCB (音樂殖民地) 之主力寫手之一,擅長以艱深險要之手法扭曲樂評,把所謂樂評帶進自身神秘詭異的理論深淵。同時間,又沉迷電腦軟體及另類電子工具的聲響創作,曾一度是網上創作共同體Tapegerm之成員。其聲響作品,散見於"mondisk"、"MCB200"及Alok的"29 minutes from the end"等專輯。此外,亦曾參與03香港視野音樂節中Media Jam項目之現場演出。

第一次接觸Uroborus (或Ouroboros)是從Carl Jung有關鍊金術的學說。其後又得知,德國化學家Kekule夢見Uroborus的意像而想通了有關苯的化學結構。那時想,很利害的一個精神原型。蛇自吞其尾而蜷圈成一個永恆地輪迴死滅重生的自我迴路。這樣自我指向、自我毀滅、自我轉化衍生的精神系統,實在非理性所能拆解馭駕。

尼釆的Eternal Return。Carl Jung的Enatiodromia。張系國於長篇三部曲小說”城”所暗藏的非直線歷史觀。藏傳佛學的生命之輪。

第一次嘗試從無聲中發聲是三年前的事。當時聽到Toshimaru Nakamura以無音源之混音器作為演奏工具,感覺驚為天人。還有Sachiko M那無樣本的取樣器演奏,同樣不可思議。兩者演奏技法當中所蘊含的禪宗佛學意念,給予人強大的關於音樂色相根源之衝擊。於是,自己便開始以Ross Bencina的音樂軟體AudioMulch,套以那種無音源之演奏技法進行實驗。剛巧當時正參與03 香港視野音樂節的Media Jam項目,部份實驗品於是便拿進去試煉。然而,因當時所製造出的聲像音響隨機性太高,感覺難以馭駕,於是其後便丟低了。

不久前,突然想起Uroborus,於是又再重拾這未完實驗。很奇怪地,是次很快便重新找到與這些奇詭聲像共存的觀視角度。突然間,一切都變得理所當然。看著Laptop螢幕上那堆以虛擬線路自我纏繞回輸的軟體組件,心想,這根本就是一個Uroborus。

先前不以為意的種種,都豁然連接起來。
-
結果,就是這首命名為"Uroborus: A Study on No-input Device"的漫長樂章。

Locd06r - Wilson Tsang - Night Suite : Music for the Tales (limited 50 cdr)

I first learned music in my early childhood from my mother. Influence started from early 80's pop sound including rock, electronic and Jazz. Later by chance I was exposed to the more alternative world of music including John Zorn, Tom Waits as well as the disbanded local group The Box, that opened up my ear to a greater music language. For the last 10 years I had been more inclined in exploring sound for media such as theatres and video art until early 2003, with the help of a friend, I released my first solo CD "Stuck in Traffic" and since then I became more focused on making songs and music that I could "play on stage". The 2nd album "Little Cold Red", released with Harbour Records, was a more in-depth collection of such effort. Recently I start shifting my focus back to theatre music to discover the possiblities and roles of music, particularly as a minimalistic expession as well as story-teller.

This is a mini-collection resulted from various projects with friends from other media including theatre and animation art over the past year. The presence of the music here is in a different role yet it's not taking a back seat. It manifests a wider, wilder, more abstract and unseen world underneath it. Part of the idea begins from my intention to extend the coldness left behind in my last album and I hope it can go further down like an undying echoes. In some case I try to capture the unspeakable loneliness or rapture that felt only through sheer simplistic notes rather than lyrics or words. In other, music is transformed and distorted like an ongoing torment of extreme and chaotic mental reflections: madness, fear, sense of danger and death, until it falls back into a realm of silent awareness. This is music that depicts many dark and sleepless nights and only belongs to the night.

Dive is a Hong Kong born musician who put forth his dedication in making music to embracing the simplicity of minimalism. Having based his work station in Washington DC, USA, Dive makes his music a communication tool that interconnects the world and his surroundings together. His new series of work, accented with a variety of acoustic elements and glitch work, is released under the title of "Deconstructed Piano". Like many other minimalists, Dive's work is simple yet emotional. "Deconstructed Piano" is an experimental piece of broken melodies meeting futuristic yet not too otherworldly ambiance. Dive strives for proportion and balance in his constant musical experiments. Recently, he is focusing on the searches for the new possibilities of virtual instruments and lo-fi field recording.

Music sounded like shit until I first heard the Velvets in my 15th year of existence. At the time I was living alone in Vancouver, Canada, sitting in a snowed apartment with one light and a crackling Fisher-price record player, and ever since I had been making irritable electric noise for my neighbours and friends to endure.

Growing up listening to Bob Dylan and The Beatles' records of my dad, they never truly resonate with me. From the Velvet Underground, the education went on from Suicide to Jesus and The Marychain; from P J Harvey to The Kills. What I found was the ever-present drone. Years later I finally and accidentally found Tony Conrad, the electric Violinist who first started it all along with The Velvets' John Cale. I could never leave amplified strings then, and there is no going back.

Currently I am Human Head Horse's Guitar noise maker.

在我第十五年的存在,The Velvet Underground改變了我對音樂的看法。當時我正一個人住在溫哥華,坐在暴風雪中、只亮著一顆電燈泡的公寓裡,聆聽著快要報廢的Fisher-price玩具唱盤。從那時起,我開始不停地為我的鄰居和朋友帶來自家製造的刺耳的電氣噪音。

幼年時我爹給我播放Bob Dylan和The Beatles的唱片,可是統統沒有帶來甚麼共鳴。從The Velvet Under-ground,我的自行教育繼續往Drone的方向發展:由Suicide到Jesus and The Marychain;由P J Harvey到The Kills。多年後我終於意外地找到電子小提琴家Tony Conrad的音樂記錄。這位大師當年與John Cale一起把電子弦樂發揚光大,從而深深地把我擄著。沒有回頭路了,沒有回頭路了。

About this release :

Put on the Headphone and Turn to 10 was recorded in Mid-Feburary 2005. Mr. Bob Brown and I were comrades in Industrial-noise-sound explorations for about three years at the time, and we had been performing at various venues from art gallery openings to opening spots for a country band at a dive bar on a Saturday night under various names such as The Tonal Syndicate, //num, and The SARS. Bob makes most of his own instruments out of factories' junk and discarded vintage gears found on the road side. His home-made low frequency instrument called the Discordia was made out of a piece of long maple wood with various metallic machinaries attached to both ends, holding an E bass string that used to be tuned to the hum of his cabinet speaker, on the right side of the piece he attached an adjustible arm that carries a Fender bass pickup. Towards the beginning of 2005 he incorporated a Yamaha electric keyboard with sampling functions. The Discordia is set on a broken floor tom, which also serves as a cymbal stand. The cymbal is also a broken one. He would use the Discordia for sustained drone notes using an old violin bow, and adjust the timbre and tone through an equaliser.

My second guitar was an unplayable 50's Japanese-made Guyatone/Kent four pick-ups guitar I bought for $65 Cdn. The intonation was terrible and so was the action, the pick ups were superb though. I ran my guitar through a custom-made mid-range booster, a custom-made fuzz pedal, a Garnet reverb unit, and a 1968 Sears Silvertone twin-twelve amplifier with built-in reverb and tremolo unit, a solid state version of the same amp used by the Velvet Underground. Prior to the recording, the neck has been broken off the guitar twice during our travellings on the road, and it seemed with each accident, the guitar gotten to sound better everytime. The electric viola was factory-made from China, and I also ran it through the same set up as the guitar.

The drone. Tony Conrad mentioned a lack of rhythm in his minimalism stands for a lack of political stance. Bob and I went from there, and shortly after we realised that although that was the ideal, him and I had a stand and we could not escape rhythm. We are anarchists. Each bit of sound we make we strived for freedom and primal passion. We aimed to make the most violent and ugliest sound, in which tranquility and beauty is hoped to be found. We sought to experience the full spectrum of emotions, and sometimes we went beyond our knowledge of all that we feel.

We were aware of the alienation felt in a capitalists' social structure, and it was our hope to agitate people's dull emotional life with our music, to make people feel alive through the threat of life with our decibles of joy.

This is the first 3"CDR singles series produced by Lona Records. As an attempt to explore the aesthetic boundaries of Hong Kong experimental sound, each 3" CDR or 3" DVDR will feature musical/multi-media works by individual artists. Each volume will be released in a limited numbered edition of 50.

Alok was a self-taught guitarist and bassist who formed his first band Pillow early in 1996. After they disbanded in mid 98, he formed Slow Tech Riddim with Kim, when they started combining electronic music with live instruments. Together they had published two albums--Greatest Hits Vol.6 and On/Off under PMPS, contributed in numerous compilation releases. Since 2001, Alok appeared as a solo artist. He published the first 3" mini album OK Karaoke with The Pancakes in 2001. From the end of 2002 to 2005, he released 3 albums: Wahoo!, 31 Minutes to Midnight and 29 Minutes from the End.

One of Hong Kong’s leading independent musicians will be celebrating his world-class new album at a revolutionary show at the end of May. He is known as Alok, and his new work 29 Minutes from the End sets his standing in stone – as one of the most remarkable songwriters and creative talents of the Hong Kong band scene. This is a continuation of his former work 31 Minutes from the End. The album shows the artist really coming into his own with an engaging, hypnotic and rocking journey into the consciousness of Hong Kong. Through the work we are introduced to a cast of some of Hong Kong’s most inspired musicians. In 29 Minutes from The End no less than five of Hong Kong’s most exciting vocalists collaborate on the work. 繼上張Wahoo!大碟大受好評後(音樂殖民地2002年全年最佳中港台大碟第二位),第二張個人大碟 <夜寂31往還 > 由之前人山人海( 黃耀明/ At17 )後自家廠牌Lona Records 推出 。這次走回以結他為主導路線,較傾向post rock 、 shoegazer 、psychedelic rock ,比以往的作品來得更旋律化,同時亦為一部獨立電影之配樂。除了13首作品外,這張大碟還附有enchanced cd工能 ,包括五個全長25分鐘的MV ,以及一首mp3 曲目。
